🙂 Hi all fellow boaters
I am in the throws of building my new counter rotating twin engined Off Shore boat and was just wondering if any of you have thoughts on where my rudder or rudders should go. On my old twin engined boat I had twin rudders directly behind the props, the boat was ok at high speed but did not turn well at low speed. I was either thinking of one rudder inside the props and close to the transom and also thinking twin rudders outside of each prop. I thought if I go this way the rudders may also act as turn fins. Love to hear your thoughs. Cheers Sorry 🙂

Another question for my new boat, have any of you made, used or recommend a fiberglass fuel tank. If I go this way are there any pitfalls I should be aware of. Cheers Sorry.

Hi Sorry. This is out on a lim that I do not have any experience (rudders) but maybe worth getting in contact with Brian Hely (Tauranga)as he has run twin engine deepvee and building another one.
As for the fiberglass fuel tank, I did build into my old glow boats a glass tank. That required an additive. I cannot remember what it was but try Hamilton Fiberglass supplies. Cheers, Harry

Hi Harry, Yeah I have done some research and the big problem is the ethanol in the petrol which destroys polyester resin, but if you use epoxy resin which is void of all solvents then the ethanol does not effect it. But as I am using BP 98 octane it does not have any ethanol in it. But in saying that I am using epoxy resin to be on the safe side. Cheers Sorry.

Why don't you put a sample of the chosen fibreglass in some petrol for a couple of weeks and compare it with a sample that has not been in petrol, better include the oil too.

I have some mixed up brew in a container and so far so good, it better be as I have now made the tank but I will let it mature for at least a month before trialing. Cheers Sorry.

And you had better have a very good high catching capacity fuel filter to catch the micro fibres that will get dislodged as the tank ages in use!
I would go to Repco or SCA and find one that is intended for a car and use that.

Another question this time involving the twin motors. Each motor runs fine individually but when I try and start the second motor the other one stops unless I have them revving very high and then they will still stop. The motors are on an angle in the boat so the spark plugs and leads are quite close to each other and we think they may be talking to each other as Steve Trott put his hand between the plugs and got quite a shock. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this and do you think this could be my problem and if so what would be a good cure. We were thinking of putting rubber or silicone between the motors somehow to see if that would overcome the problem. Cheers Sorry

Hi Brian, Are the exhausts completely separate or do they join somewhere along the way. Rudy had the same problem here, using a common silencer after the tune pipes at the transom. Had same motor problem as you until here separated the silencers.
