Letter from Andrew Colquhoun advising change of insurance changes

What are the changes? How do these affect members if at all please?

Nationals venue and date required for 2018 if any club interested!!!!

When was anything sent out to the clubs asking for expressions of interest in hosting a Nationals? (This should have been done months ago!). Has the committee chosen a date/s and format that clubs can consider? Same for 2019? Is the committee going to organize and run a Nationals (as per the constitution), or do they expect clubs to do the job?

Changed underwriters and saved us $135 on our premium for the same cover
Can't plan a Nationals if we don't have a venue or host club aye
Nationals venue and date required for 2018 if any club interested!!!! was published in November minutes and of course clubs putting up their hand to host a nationals event are also conspicuous by their absence aye.

Yes agree with that we used to have clubs lining up to host the Nats and often had multiple competitive bids to host, whereby they presented their respective cases at the AGM for members to consider and vote on.

That's great about the insurance.
Regarding the Nationals. A short sentence in the middle of the November minutes is not really putting forth asking the clubs for any interest in hosting is it? The committee really needs to write to each club asking for an expression of interest, with some idea of what is being considered in terms of when and what. If you do not make a direct contact with the clubs then it is certain that you will not get any response. Also an indication of when the committee is looking at holding a Nationals, how many days it will run, and what format are definite considerations for any club, as well as a commitment from the committee that they will be running the event, not like this year when there was none. This is the committees role, in fact the only event they are mandated to organize and run, it is part of the job! Who was it that wrote that in the constitution again?
If people are in the leadership role, then leading is what needs to happen. If that doesn't happen, there is no point blaming anything else or making excuses.
I can speak for the BOPMPBC and say that we are not in a position to take this on for 2018 due to major works happening in and around our venue, for which we have no time frames currently given for the completion of these works. If you want us to consider 2019, then please put something better together for consideration.
One could also ask why Masterton and Wellington are not putting something forwards in regards to hosting a Nationals when there are several of their members on committee and it has been 5 years since there was a Nationals down that way? After all BOP has put all the effort in for the last few years!
As far as what happened years ago, well we all know that things have changed, for better or worse, and there must be an adaptation to how it is today. Is it not about making things work and promoting model power boating in NZ?

I thought I might jump in here with my two cents worth. I use to spend a lot of time and significant money with boats and served on the committee. I have now moved over to off road 1/5th cars (less politics and people just having fun). Peter you always seem to have a comment when the minutes are put up. I know when I first started in boats I would look at the NZMPBA forum each day to see what was happening. If I was new to it now I would just walk away from any interest as all you ever do is bitch and moan. If you have a problem with the committee and what they are doing send them an email don't use this forum all the time.
I would love to get back into it but I just don't have the water here and Blenheim and Christchurch is a long way to go and race.
The only way you are going to grow and sustain your membership is if you just cut the crap out and come up with solutions in stead of putting volunteers down all the time. If you look at the current committee there is more experience than ever and I wish them good luck with trying to get it back to the good old days. Yes they are not always going to get it right but at least give them a chance.

perhaps there are very good reasons why we have not jumped in offering to host the Nationals, would be a good idea to find out before judging and bad mouthing clubs on this forum. The Wairarapa club would certainly like to think they could host the Nationals again but with our lake covered in algae bloom and slime at present it is not an option. This issue has hounded us over the last few years and looks as though it is going to be a long stint out of the water again this year. It would be irresponsible of us to put up our hand to host the Nationals under these circumstances. If you have a problem with committee I suggest you write to them.

So what are saying Andrew? Are we who are actually members, not allowed to ask questions? If you think it is all bitch and moan, you are wrong. That is the attitude that comes from those who bullies and push others to their own view.
If you are going to lead an organisation, you have to be prepared to front up to some scrutiny and question. Those who do not like that usually have something to hide. And hey, I served on the committee too, including two years as President when NO ONE else wanted to. So I know what was expected of us to do then, and what should be expected of the committee today.
The mindset that things can back to "the good old days" is fundamentally flawed. The past is gone, and any efforts must look to today and the future, or they really are unfeasible. I might be one of the few that bother to speak up, but I am also still a financial and active member, and simply put forward a point of view from where I stand as a BOP member, which I am entitled to, unlike your self and others who walked away with attitude against the association. You were part of the problem and made no solutions yourself at the time. All you are doing here is trying to make an issue out of something that does not exist, in short start a fight. So go outside and if I am not there in five minutes start without me!
It is old attitudes (like yours) that plague this organisation and drive people away! There are more model boaters in NZ that will have nothing to do with the NZMPBA, and most of that goes back to before my time, so where indeed lies the real problems?
I also get tired of being shouted down for having a say and do not appreciate your insults. As a one who has put a fair amount of time in myself, I have also had my fair share of BS from others, and that is not my intention when I put forward questions or challenge how things are.
You are right in one thing, it is about the boating being fun, building it at grass roots level, which I have always maintained and worked towards. I have some ideas, but no body seems to give a stuff or care for any of them. So what should I do about them? If members were more engaged and listened to at times there may well be less problems.
