Hi Boaters
After considering the spate of bad weather we have had in the last week and checking over the boating site on the Hutt river tonight, a decision has been made to postpone Sundays (20th) Offshore regatta.
The reasoning is thus:
• The river flow is still very high at about 5 times normal and is unlikely to drop sufficiently in time for Sunday, given that there is still some rain to fall between now and then, and even if it does drop some more it is still likely to be carrying some floating debris enough to kick up rudders and give us a generally miserable time. This higher flow is also likely to be hazardous for the rescue boat drivers.
• The ground is very sodden and unlikely to dry much by Sunday, if more expected rain falls intermittently. So the ground will churn up to a quagmire.
• To give an idea how high the river has been 3 pieces of driftwood have been lodged in the rubbish bin by the flow lol. Peak was 1036 cumecs, it is now 104 cumecs and steady, last club day it was 10 cumecs, 10 to 20 is a good flow for boating.
• The good news is the steps are still there.
So where does this leave us, we had 17 entries as below.
John Belworthy 76
Malcolm Belworthy 77
Nigel Wong 261
Pieter Lokum 83
Peter Collier 23
Bruce Clarke 12
Birmy Korving 286
Leigh Marsden 131
Murray Smithson 69
Mark Graham 102
Darrell Hansen 31
Trevor Emerson 78
Tony Rutledge 43
Rudy van V 204
Graham Alywyn 59
Keith Ewing 27
Terry Riddiford 32
We are happy to carry these entries over to a future date, at this stage proposed as 10 December a Saturday (not Sunday). Reasoning for this is that the tide is ideal with high water at 1:59pm, and some of us organising it have commitments on the Sunday. The week earlier, Sunday 4th would not have worked as high tide is 9:19 am and we would run out of water by 2-3 pm.
So we are asking for a 2/3rds re-confirmation from the above entrants (12 to make it happen) to help us decide whether we do race on the 10th Dec, and indications earlier rather than later would be good, say by 28 Nov. Similarly those that could not enter for the 20th Nov for whatever reason, but now can make it you are welcome to put an entry in for this new date.
Apologies for this but really out of our control.
Regards Peter
