A message from Steve

Hi Guys,

Given the lack of support the Hydrofests were getting, and the subsequent discussions about converting the event to cater to a wider interest, then please find attached the revised entry form ( also loaded to the NZMPBA web site) and classes the BOP Club last night decided to put forward for immediate trial at the next event in Masterton.

It falls into line with some of the thinking in combining some classes to get the minimum level of support to make them run so there for still encouraging minority groups, and other classes that possibly require becoming more “specialised and specific” to stop the cross use of the same boat in multiple events.

We trust these changes will encourage your support and attendance at the Masterton Event and future Ovalfest regattas.

The BOPMPBC would appreciate this variation to take place with immediate effect.

Steve

Interesting. Just in the painting stage of my new sport 45 hydro which I purchased last year after attending the hyrdofest in Hamilton. Thought this would be a good class to expand into in order to get more racing when attending the hydrofests. I also finally have my 1/8th scale hydro running well after three years of alterations and now there are no individual classes to run them in. Just can't build boats quick enough to support classes/event before they are altered. The next hydrofest would have hopefully been my first to attend this year with three different boats. Looks like I will renew my suha membership in order to race them.

Cheers Matt

Hi Matt,
Unfortunately the last 3 regattas have had 5 or less entries, some thing had to change or we just wernt going to bother at all, thats a worse outcome.
By and large when we did get entries for B Hydro they were Sp 45s and I dont really see that changing, so run either that or your 1/8th. Its only a 1.5 day event and we just cant fit that much stuff in without a bit of imagination being used. Its been known for a LONG time, and is why we have the arrangement with SUHA that for your Sp45, and more so 1/8th racing thats where you need to go.This next Masterton event, as noted, in many ways is a "trial" to get a real feel for what people actually want. No one seems to say much until there is a change that doesnt suit them, regardless of whether they had been or were "intending" to start coming to some events.Perhaps you and others that feel the revised format disadvantages them could tell us what it is you actually want, but keep in mind you can only do so much at a 1.5 day event!
Try being part of the solution to the problems you see !

Cheers, ST.

Hi Steve,

Well I didn't realize that the numbers had dropped as low as 5 or less. Is it correct that there have been only five hydrofest regattas run?
I have only been to one which I think was the second one run which was in Hamilton. The format allowed me to run two boats in five events. Under the new format I could enter the same boats in two events. I must say that the original format allowed for more racing over the weekend. I do agree that there has been a decline in the number of people attending this year. Unfortunately within the Hamilton club there has been a 40% decline in membership this year which has probably impacted on the hydrofest regattas. I am hoping that these members will start boating again soon as we had eight thunder boats running or being built in the last couple of years. I myself only started running hydros last year and now own three due mainly to the introduction of this series.

I hope that the new direction brings more competitors back into these regattas.

Good Luck
Cheers Matt
