Just another thought on this. How about the pit man call the boat as it passes by, that would mean we don't need an extra bod calling the boats.

I cant see how that would work, firstly a good callers total focus should be on telling the driver of all conditions on the course ie dead boats, rescue boats and even water conditions, that alone is enough to do if you want it done properly particualy in a long race when the fatigue factor comes in for both driver and caller. In the rule book there is a standard size for number boards, my own ones although bought from the assc are not to the required size so I will modify them to comply. if those volunteering to lap score cannot see the boards as the boats go past at whatever speed perhaps they should opt for another job that thay may do more comfortably, there are also other issues with these boards, in Taupo although I have the board on the hatch of my boat the water from outlets was obscuring it at high speed, ally foil tape was a good temporary fix.Just my 2 cents worth Murray

Hi Murray, You have hit the nail on the head. You are making all these excuses why a pit man can not call the laps when you admit that your number is not legal. I rest my case. Cheers

Think A little bit harder Brian, what happens if three, or even two pitmen call their numbers at the same time? The lap counter will be going what? Who? Oh crap...! Murray is right that the pitman's role is to assist the driver in calling the course during a race, as well as launching, retrieving etc. Everyone has access to the rulebook, so check your number boards and make sure they are right before race day. And if an issue arises, address it before the next race day, all very simple really.

I only started this conversation because of the non compliant number boards and only made a suggestion Peter of another way that laps could be called. In my limited time of racing Off Shore there would be very few occasions when two or three boats passed the start finish line at the same time. Half the time there is usually only a couple of boats running at the same time. What happens in Oval racing using the IRMS system the pitman presses the button as the boat crosses the start finish line. I can't really see any difference. I think we all are getting a pedantic over something that should never of happened and that is people using under size and ill legal number boards. Cheers have a happy day
