Thought it might be an idea to have a bit of fun at our own expense by sharing some of the stupid things we do for a laugh.

So I'm in the garage last weekend and getting boats ready for this weekend's Hydrofest.

Out comes the T1 hydro and I decide to put an Ezy start on it and lube the shaft and all that good stuff. Time to start her up and make sure she idles nicely etc. etc. etc. not to mention making sure the servos still work.

Takes a bit more to start than I thought she would with the ezy start but sure enough she eventually coughs into life. Seems to idle okay, responds to the throttle okay, but where on earth is all that smoke coming from? The whole engine practically disappears in a cloud of exhaust smoke. Its difficult to see where it's coming from, but seems to be coming from the exhaust coupler and even from behind the flywheel! Okay pinch yourself Bob, there's no exhaust gases in the crankcase so they can't come out a leaky crank case seal.

Everything seems to be functioning okay but still there's the smoke.

So I think about it for a while and come back later to take the exhaust manifold off to see if there's a cracked exhaust port on the jug or something.

So I unbolt the Exhaust manifold and take the adapter flange off and there's my answer! The round side of the adapter flange is facing the slotted exhaust pot and the slotted side is trying to seal on the header. Needless to say it was leaking like a sieve!.

I changed the exhaust manifold o'rings when I was a steve's at the last hydrofest. it had been along day's racing and I'd had a beer or 3 when I did the job. Must have done it with my eyes shut! Lol!

Okay so who else is brave enough to share some of their own muppetry?

You were a bit out of it that night, you put the motor back in without connecting the pipe and rather than take the motor out again we somehow managed to squeeze the pipe back in. If you hadn't scratched from T1 on the Sunday you would have found the ex leak sooner.

You should be right now though, it was all the pull starting you had to do with the standard starter that had you absolutely stuffed and lying down on the workshop floor.

Yeah Pete, despite flip flopping about scratching to help with the race directing. I had decided to run anyway only to have to pulled from T1 anyway because I split the fuel bag while filling it up for the practice session. Wasn't watching what I was doing and kept cranking until I saw fuel flowing out the split at the front!

Yup the muppetry just kept on comin that weekend.......hope this one goes better?

Hi All,

I have a moment that I am not sure I told many, if any about !

Many moons ago when I was a green horn boaty, I had a Picco 90,At some stage I had decided to pull it apart to see how it worked ! In the process I was trying to get the very tight fitting liner out of the case. I had sprayed it with CRC and stuck my little finger down the top and hooked it onto the exhaust port a little to get hold of it and try to pull it out. With much heaving and grunting it wouldn't budge, and in my increasing efforts and more CRC I managed to accidently let my little finger slip right into the port upto the first joint with the end of my finger thru into the exhaust manifold. When I tryed to pull it out it was kinda stuck ! So after more CRC, then a change to soap and dish wash liquid etc with nothing working I noticed the end of my finger swelling and changing colour ! I was at home by myself that day and started to panic a bit ! I figured I had two choices, the first was to drive to the hospital with this thing on my finger, but I did not like the thought of my motor being cut in half to get it off ! Second choice was to man up and get this thing off on my own. Having decided on option 2, I clamped the case in the vice, and started to pull on my finger, nope it was stuck and hurting ! I tried to push it back out using a screwdriver handle up the manifold but that didn't work either. After more swearing and cussing, I poured in more lubricant and had decided the time had come to give it one mighty yank. So closing my eyes and gritting my teeth, I gave one mighty hard tug and f-k did it hurt ! My finger was finally free! when I took a look there was blood pouring all over, I had ripped my finger nail right off and left a sizable chunk of flesh off the side of my finger all still in the casing !
My finger has healed and still shows the scars, and I am not sure what the moral is for this story ! The Picco still sits some where in the depths of my garage, still in bits, covered in blood and other bodily things !! No its not for sale !!

I guess I can laugh at it now, so if Peter C feels inclined, this could be a submission for the funny - shit section of the next Propshaft !
I remind you this was a very long time ago, and I am now a bit wiser on pulling motors apart !

Cheers, TUI.

Thanks Steve

Actually there is an idea for a 'bright ideas' piece , I know how to make a puller to get liners out, provided the piston is removed first. Tony Rutledge's dad made one many years ago and I have used the principle to remove stuck liners a few times, quite simple really.

And one for bearings too.

Sounds like you need to invent a finger puller for steve lol.
I have done lots of dumb things , I was at the lake doin some testing a couple of years back, I started the boat on the stand, biffed it in the water and hit the gas, hmm its taking a while to get her up on the plane, must be a bit rich??, done two laps and still no go, brough her back in and realised the foam from my stand was stuck to the bottom of the boat!!.
I have also thrown my boat in without turning on the radio box or without a prop.
