Post Racing, Playing or Building

Just thought i would ask the question. Do you prefer to play, race or build or i guess all of them. What makes you want to race or what keeps you away from racing. Ill start it off.

I enjoy racing and playing and only learning the build side. Due to there being limited numbers most times i go out i am just playing and enjoying getting a little more out of my boat. Most of the time something breaks so end up fixing it during the week, which i guess is part of the build. The face of modle boating has changed over the years from having to develop all your own equipment to now where you can buy ready to run stuff. From someone who has or had no mechanical experience the boats have defiantly let me learn along the way. There are plenty of guys out there who can lead you in the right direction (and unfortuanlty a few that lead you in the wrong direction) but you live and learn and i guess you get to know who to listen to.

I love racing as i am pretty competative but i guess i enjoy seeing how i compare to the others. Being pretty new to the whole thing i enjoy meeting others from other regions, and having a good laugh. If i could afford to keep going over that expensive bit of water i would race a fair bit more, but will pick and choose and im sure the North Islands is going to be a great weekend.

Hope im not opening up a can of worms but would be interesting to see what people think.

Started off playing and initially a trip to the lake would end when all our boats broke. We'd go home fix everything and go back the following week until everything broke again.

Then the time came and boats started coming back to the jetty in one piece, and we even started taking them home in running condition!

Trips to the lake started to get a bit ho hum, running boats round and round and round. Was great for a while, then we needed something else to get it interesting.

Now we race on Club days, and I just love racing and competition. I Really enjoying racing over a series of events. It's cool to be able to track your progress from year to year and set litle goals like being able to move up the ladder a few spots. For me that's important.

I also really enjoying traveling to out of town events, it's great to meet and build friendships with new people. The camaderie that has been building over the last few years has been fantastic, and more often than not, you go to an event just to catch up with people you haven't seen for ages and give the wee man some stick!

I really enjoy building as well, right now I'm in the middle of my first ever wooden boat build and it's a fantastic experience, can't wait to see the finished product. But with all my boats I've enjoyed tinkering away with various mods and repairs. It's very satisfying to have built something or modified or rebuilt it, and to have it run well.

There's so many facets to this sport/hobby (if you want to see the debate about that head on over to jims)that you can never know it all as there's always something else coming out, or even another facet like prop design/modification/ engine mods, boat design etc. etc. etc. It's hard to get bored with it.

started off with racing and speed runs so racing was at the time was at the for front of the hobby for me.
After joing a club that ran most weekends, tuning and a sort of playing was at the time a normal weekend until we went away racing then we went as a club on a mission..

Now that im older building boats and trying to get them going well and going away racing with my good friends is all i want now,so playing dosn't appeal to me now.

Im presently building a mono with a gear box engine ready for the North island champs, rebuilding a 90 cat also for the North island champs which at the moment is giving me a real sence of pleasure as i have taken the time to look at the new hardware and been getting some good advise from my mates....

I like flat out racing, spending hours with Philip and Damien leading up 2 a racing meeting getting everything right, then getting in 2 some competitive racing in t1 thunderboats and try 2 foot it with the t2's an in sport hydro. i saw my old man’s baker t1 hydro and thought i had 2 have one, once it was built and i had my 1st club day and had 1 really close race with bob in his cat, that was it i had the bug.
Now i have a baker sport hydro on the way and going to have a crack at setting it up by myself, with help when needed. lol
But now 4 me it’s all about beating dad. haha when i bet him in my thunder boat with a t1 motor and dad had his t2 motor in the boat i was stoked, In till he ran me over. lol but hey at the end of the day that’s racing and no one means 2 do it, good old father son rivalry.
Its a great hobby and you get 2 meet a great bunch of guys. big thanks 2 Damien baker, Philip Stilwel, dad for helping me set up my thunderboat, and everyone who has taking the time 2 help me.

For me, having boated on & off since 1970, the enjoyment of successful (& at times failed) wood boat builds, & motor mods, & most importantly all the people that I have met.
Some that are still good friends today & are priceless to me.
Keeping in mind always that boating is a hobby & is best if done for the fun of it, kept me on a right track to last all these years.
Thanks everyone-

I am by nature a competetive person so racing is what does it for me,gota be a hydro though :).
Its great catching up with mates at the lake, I have made some great friends in this hobby.
I dont really get much enjoyment out of the building process, maybe its because im so impatient lol.
cheers
Damian
